The generic name of this drug is citalopram HBr; orally administered selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor with unrelated chemical structure of other available antidepressant agents. It is white to off-white powder and sparingly soluble in water and in ethanol. It is available in 10 mg tablets, 20 mg and 40 mg respectively. Some of the inactive ingredients are corn starch, copolyvidone, magnesium stearate, lactose monohyrate, glycerin and crosscarmellose sodium. 20 mg tablet is in pink and beige for 10 mg tablet.
The initial dose of 20 mg once daily with an increased dose of 40 mg/ day. There are certain conditions that may require a dose of 60 mg/day and it should be administered once daily with or without meals. 20 mg/ day is the recommended dose for geriatric patients with hepatic impairment. In treating pregnant women, doctor should carefully consider the risk and benefits of the treatment as it may developed complications requiring hospitalization, tube feeding and respiratory support.
Patients should be monitored in case of discontinuation of the drug. Gradual dose reduction is recommended rather than abrupt cessation. There have been reports that abrupt cessation causes dizziness, agitation, irritability and sensory disturbances. In case of using Celexa to Monoamine Oxidase inhibitor, there should be 14 days gap. .Celexa is available in three forms: 10 mg ( color beige, film-coated and oval), 20 mg ( pink, film-coated and oval) and 40 mg ( oval, white and film-coated).
Important information for patients during celexa administration: - The healthcare provider together with the patient should discuss issues regarding the medication administration - The patient should be informed regarding the risk of serotonin syndrome and concomitant use of Celexa, other serotonergic agents and tramadol. - The patient should be cautioned about hazardous machinery, including automobiles because psychoactive drug may impair judgment, motor skills and thinking. - Proper caution should be made in taking Celexa, NSAIDs, aspirin and warfarin that may affect coagulation because it would interfere with serotonin reuptake and it would increase the risk of bleeding. - Patient should inform the doctor if she is pregnant or intend to be pregnant druing the drug administration.
